Please congratulate choir students belonging to the Blue Belles, Bow Ties, and Baker’s Dozen choral groups for earning superior ratings at the Alabama Vocal Association Solo/Ensemble Competition! This performance assessment is offered for soloists and small choral ensembles, in which they sing two songs un-conducted and from memory for one judge. They are graded on pitch and rhythm accuracy, intonation, song choice, etc. out of 88 points; anything 80 or higher receives a I (the highest score one can earn) while anything 70 through 79 gets a II; 60 through 69 is a III and anything lower receives a IV.

Baker had the largest group of people in Mobile County audition, with three ensembles (small singing groups) and 12 soloists. All three ensembles received a superior rating; in fact, the Baker’s Dozen received a perfect score! All solos made either a I or a II rating. Alto Gavrielle Bridges (who made a superior rating) said, “I wasn’t expecting to make as high a score as I did, but this competition really shows how I’ve improved and what I can do to keep improving.” The assessment really gives everyone a goal to achieve and motivation for progress, and is a beneficial experience for anyone wanting to pursue a career in music.
